Why art? What is art? What are the limits of art? What can art do? How does art work? Why does art move us?

Why does art move us?

What do we understand by aesthetics? And how does a look at pre-modern Europe change our understanding of the aesthetic? The collaborative research centre Different Aesthetics examines texts, images and objects from antiquity to the early modern period. The aim is to illustrate the relevance of 2,000 years of cultural history for current debates on art and society and to initiate a ‘different’ definition of the aesthetic.
